Disconnecting vs. logging off

There are two ways to leave Remote Desktop, and they work differently.

  • Disconnect – closes your window, but your apps keep running on the server. Next time you connect, you pick up right where you left off.
  • Log off – ends your session and closes all of your apps. Save your work first.

Log off at the end of your workday, or whenever you won't be back for a while.

How to log off

  • Web portal: click the person icon in the top-right corner, then Sign out.
  • Windows app: in your connection's menu, choose Log Out.
  • iPhone, iPad, or Android app: open the menu and tap Log Off.
  • Mac app: the Session menu has Disconnect session. When you're done for the day, save your work and close your remote apps.

Tip: The Windows app's Sessions menu and the Mac app's Session menu also have Send Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
